How to Use Cologne – Applying Cologne

One thing that often comes up with new cologne wearers or young cologne users is how much men’s fragrance to apply. We’ve all been in a room where some guy who doesn’t know how much cologne to wear is just swimming in the stuff. The scent overpowers everyone in the room, giving the more sensitive to aromas a headache, turning the stomach of one or two and generally annoying everybody else.

A man wearing too much cologne is like a woman wearing too much makeup: it completely ruins the effect of a perfectly good product. You can be wearing the cleanest and freshest cologne and if you wear too much of it, the fragrance becomes offense. They say the skunk smell is so bad because it’s a smell so sweet that it offends. So remember, young cologne applicators, if you wear too much cologne, you won’t be impressing anyone.

How To Apply Cologne

This is a good general way to apply cologne. Read the note at the bottom of this page so you can make necessary changes when you learn how to apply cologne according to the brand you use. Each brand is different, but the following rules for using cologne are meant to give you a good starting point.

1. Spray One Spray on the Wrist – Choose a wrist and spray your cologne once on your wrist. The reason you place the cologne on your wrist is because your pulse is close to the skin, and therefore your wrist is a “heat point”. Heating up the cologne increases the smell.

2. Rub Your Wrists Together
– Rubbing the wrists together allows you to spread the cologne to your other wrist, and therefore another heat point. Your wrists will rub up against other parts of your body throughout the course of the day or night, spreading the cologne around your body.

3. Rub Your Wrist Against Your Neck
– Where you normally feel for your pulse on your neck, rub your wrist across the pulse point. This will spread the cologne to another heat point – this one close to your head without getting on your face. Keep in mind that all of this is from the original squirt of cologne – and that all of this takes place in a matter of seconds.

Using Cologne

Remember that all colognes are not made the same. Some are particularly strong. Others are subtle and understated. Some have strong high notes and weak base notes, so a light application ends up going away within an hour. Others have a more subtle high note and a long-lasting, strong base note, so you can apply too much and annoy people. Know the kind of cologne you’re wearing.

Get a vague idea about high notes (early), middle notes (first hour or so) and base notes (the duration of the cologne’s effects). Those are the vaguest of hints, so read a little more to know what you’re doing.
